Dance Overviews

Lucky Stars offers instruction in a wide range of dances for settings ranging from formal events to night clubs.  Here you can learn Ballroom, Country / Western, and Latin based dances.  If you unfamiliar with any of the dances a brief description of each is included here.  Instruction is not always offered for all of these dances, so check our class schedule.  If you want to learn something that is not currently on the schedule then call about our private lessons.

BACHATA (demo)

The Bachata dance was said to have originated from the Dominican Republic. It is danced by couples usually in a romantic and sensual story-telling style. The Bachata dance was also, at some point, considered to be a passionate and sensual kind of expression of love through dance. Aside from the romantic-side of the Bachata dance, its story-telling humor also depicts women overpowering men. At that time, the Bachata dance was performed by servants after a hard day's work. The dance was used as a means of merrymaking of the people in the village.

CHA CHA (demo)

Yet another Latin dance with a wide variety of music from which to choose from. A lot of the music that you hear on the radio from Christina Aguilera, Santana etc.

You can dance cha cha to, as well as most of the popular club mixes and even some country music make for good Cha-Cha.

EAST COAST SWING (demo)

A step pattern of any combination of six or eight count swing patterns that has a generally stationary, circular step pattern, each style having mutually performed rock steps or variations thereof. Six-count swing may include single, double and/or triple rhythms.

HUSTLE (demo)

This is the most versatile of all the dances from 50s Rock and Roll, Big Band, Rhythm and Blues, 70s and 80s, and a variety of today’s music. Lots of spins, very fun.  Easy to learn and will definitely get your feet moving!!

MERENGUE (demo)

Here's a fast Latin dance that never slows down. Very easy to learn and I often refer to this dance as the “marching with style”. It's the most popular dance at most Latin clubs along with Salsa.

POLKA

A step pattern of any continuous triple step pattern and progresses counter-clockwise around the dance floor.

SALSA (demo)

A very energetic Latin dance.  Lots of fun, complete with spins, sharp movement, and crisp turns.  Very popular in Latin clubs along with merengue.  Styles varies depending on where you are from.
Costa Rican salsa in general goes side to side but LA style for example goes forward and backwards. This dance is also similar to Mambo. A great dance to learn if you want to break into the latin club scene not only in Atlanta but all over the U.S.

RUMBA

A moderately slow Latin dance with plenty of wraps, under arm turns and a truck load of flirtation.  Often called the dance of love, you can Rumba to a wide variety of music from Tito Puente to Jimmy Buffet.

TANGO

There are several different styles of Tango.  The three most popular are American, International, and Argentine. Both American and International travel around the ballroom following the line of dance. Tango is a stylish, sexy and very popular dance!

TRIPLE TWO

A step pattern that uses six beats of music and includes two triple steps and two 1 beat steps and progresses counter-clockwise around the dance floor.

TWO-STEP

A pattern that has a generally forward counter-clockwise progression and contains the Two-Step rhythm of: Slow, Slow, Quick, Quick or Quick, Quick, Slow, Slow or Quick, Quick, Slow, Quick, Quick, Slow.

NIGHT CLUB TWO-STEP

Any 8 count basic Night Club pattern (1 2& 3, 4& 5, 6& 7, 8&) may be used that has a generally stationary pattern. The dance generally accents counts 1 3 5 and 7 with a slow developing “side step” and has a definite swing and sway motion to it.

WALTZ

Waltz continuous to be one of the most romantic and elegant dances of all times.  With long sweeping movements constant rotating with stylish poses; the Waltz definitely commands attention on the dance floor.
It takes a bit more effort to learn at first compare to other dances, but the patience really pays off. At first you have to learn to navigate through the dance floor without bumping into other dancers.  After you get past the basics of the movements; the patterns becomes easier to grasp and you will be gliding smoothly through the dance floor in no time.

WEST COAST SWING

A step pattern that consists of any six or eight count swing pattern that has a generally stationary, slotted step pattern: 1, 2, 3&4, 5&6 or 1, 2, 3&4, 5, 6, 7&8. A coaster step is considered a forward progressive step and is not allowed in place of the anchor step.
